What to Expect with the New Suzuki Jimny 2019 SUV
Added: 15 August 2018
The world famous Suzuki Jimny is now in to its 20th year and Suzuki have made no signs that it will be stopping its production as they are set to release a fourth-generation model in 2019. The new model appears to have stayed true its successful roots as it humbly lacks a modern design and boasts a proud retro look.
With promised better on-road dynamics as well as it’s characteristic no-nonsense off-road ability, the fourth generation Suzuki Jimny looks set to be the best one yet.
New Suzuki Jimny 2019: Design and Size
The Jimny’s towering cube-like shape, wide front grille, distinctive round headlights and flat clamshell bonnet make it instantly recognisable – however there are noticeable differences from the outgoing model. The wheel arch haunches are bulkier and house 15-inch alloy wheels while the classic spare wheel still sits on the back. For the first time though, the taillights have been shift down to the rear bumper which Suzuki say allows for a bigger opening of the tailgate.
When it comes to size, the length of the Jimny is exactly the same as before being 3,645mm from front to back. Width wise however it takes a slightly wider stance at 1,645mm and it’s also higher by 20mm too. The distance from the ground to the lower part of the car comes in at around 210mm which is an important figure for those of you that will be taking your Jimny off-road.
New Suzuki Jimny 2019: Interior Updates
On the inside of the New Jimny, Suzuki have brought things much more up to date with the modern car interior layout by directly taking the switches and knobs on the lower part of the dashboard from the latest Suzuki Swift. A seven-inch touchscreen display has been implemented in to the middle of the dashboard and is fully connectible with Bluetooth and smartphone linking applications. Suzuki have also implemented an information display unit located in between the dials on the instrument cluster.
With all of this new fancy interior technology, Suzuki insist that the cabin environment is still a straight-forward and functional place to operate, even when wearing gloves!
New Suzuki Jimny 2019: Engines and Performance
With engine specifications still yet to be confirmed for the British market, all we know so far is that only one engine unit has been confirmed for the European market. The renowned 1.0-litre BoosterJet three-cylinder has been ditched for the fourth-generation Jimny; taking its place will be a brand new and much more simplified 1.5-litre four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol unit. Not only is it more powerful than the outgoing engine, producing 101bhp and 130Nm torque, it’s also a lot lighter and more neatly packaged meaning it’s smaller and allowing for more room elsewhere in the car. It comes with two transmission options, a five-speed manual that will hit 90mph and a four-speed automatic which just undercuts the manual at 87mph.
On the road, thanks to an improved suspension system and a more rigid ladder frame the ride quality now boasts better comfort while a brand new steering damper minimises shocks and shakes.
Off-road, the Allgrip Pro part time four-wheel drive system is standard fit and can be configured three ways for different transfers of range. Alongside this are a whole set of new off-road assistance features too. These include; descent control, automatic emergency braking, six airbags, tyre pressure monitoring system, lane departure warning and also high beam assist.
