It’s always difficult to pick out the “best” car of a type since there are so many options and everyone’s criteria for what they consider the best is constantly changing. Whether it’s the price of the vehicle, the use case for it or even your personal tastes, there are plenty of factors that could alter your idea of the best 4x4.

But even with that said, we can take a look at some of the best 4x4 cars out there so that you can make an informed decision on which one to purchase based on a number of different practical factors.

Suzuki Vitara

The Suzuki Vitara is a budget-friendly 4x4 that does surprisingly well in a number of different aspects. The 1.4-litre engine is small yet packs decent fuel efficiency and the suspension is tuned surprisingly well for such a low-budget 4x4. It handles precisely but is a little let down by the steering that feels a bit too light. There are many other 4x4s around this price range that pose as competitors to the Suzuki Vitara, but even as a newly-purchased vehicle, the Vitara has a very competitive starting price that makes it one of the most attractive 4x4s on the market today.

Isuzu D-Max

The Isuzu D-Max is a brilliant 4x4 that ticks all of the right boxes. There are a number of different variations on sale and you’ll find that the D-Max can perform very efficiently under most circumstances. It’s a rugged, tough and sturdy 4x4 which is to be expected from Isuzu, one of the most famous pick-up truck manufacturers that has a reputation for focusing on function over form. However, as a result, it’s not the most refined 4x4 and to some people, it can feel a little dated in terms of looks. However, if looks are the last of your concerns then the Isuzu D-Max is the perfect 4x4 for the price.

Subaru Forester

The Subaru Forester can be a relatively inexpensive yet large and spacious 4x4. If you’re looking for a budget 4x4 then older models of the Subaru Forester (pre-2010) can be had for under £6,000 if you look in the right places. However, newer models will set you back a bit more but offer you far better after sales service and also the latest technologies and futures that we have come to expect from larger 4x4 vehicles.

Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk

The Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk was one of the best-rated 4x4s during 2018, and the 2019 iteration improves on the previous iteration by not touching what made the previous models so good. It has a luxurious and plush interior that is packed with technology to make you feel like you’re in the future, and there’s plenty of off-road potential thanks to the V8 engines providing an impressive amount of power. It’s not the most exciting 4x4 to look at or drive but it certainly gets the job done and the luxurious interiors are a fantastic addition for anyone looking for a higher-quality 4x4.
